Gadget Girl Takes Montreal: Sudan Archives Live at Le Studio TD

The singer-violinist matched her high-BPM tracks with an infectious, alluring stage presence.

After kicking off the North American leg of her “The BPM” tour earlier this month, Sudan Archives made her return to the city on Saturday to deliver another high-octane set. Named after her excellent third studio album which was released last fall, Sudan Archives ushered in this era by crafting a persona called Gadget Girl, a technologically advanced musician celebrated for innovative approach. Fully embodying this newfound identity, the musician’s live performance elevated the record to new heights, enhanced by her captivating set design and immersive laser lighting.

Under a piercing red lights, Sudan Archives made her way onto the stage with an electric violin in hand. The crowd drew silent, waiting in anticipation as her figure emerged from the smoke. She paced slowly at first, as if calibrating the space, then snapped into motion and launched straight into “DEAD,” fully inhabiting the character in a poised, unreadable motion. It was almost like she was waiting for the cue to be programmed as her white contact lenses reflected the glow as she moved.

Sudan Archives’ THE BMP sees her embracing her roots, as she recorded the LP with friends and family between Detroit, Chicago and Los Angeles. The record flows together seamlessly, fusing elements of jersey club, beatwork, and dance music, all held together with her innovative fiddling style. Gadget Girl’s futuristic live performance transformed the record into a high-energy dance club and the crowd managed to match her energy. Her rendition of “YEA YEA YEA” had the entire floor moving in sync, “TOUCH ME,” and “COME AND FIND YOU” took on a lively cadence. The musician also performed revamped versions of a few fan favourites such as “Nont for Sale” and “Freakalizer,” tailored to her set.

“The BPM” tour found Sudan Archives immersing the crowd into her avant-garde world with such precision. From commanding the crowd on her podium to reworking her songs with the help of her drum machine and electric violin, to the subtle futuristic touches that brought her character to life, the performance felt like a beautifully curated, art-forward spectacle. She seamlessly dictated the room’s mood with each song to an entirely attentive audience.

Being an experimental artist, Sudan Archives ultimately redefined traditional stage presence with an innovative approach to live music, making her character-driven stage personas feel perfectly calibrated for any setting.
