The art trio’s fifth full length record, The Witness is due on September 3rd via Secret City Records (Canada) and Joyful Noise.
The Witness marks a left turn within the band’s sound given its candidness. This record was Self-produced and record during the majority of 2020. That year of strife, solitude and reflection enabled the band to take a look at their state of playing and performing. This new record moves into a new direction, this time embracing Following haphazard ideas within their initial ideas and demoed versions. The departure of keyboardist Max Henry as a full time member and Ben Shemie locating to Paris brought on new challenges to the band both socially and creatively.
Compared to previous records, The Witness is more jazz driven as it designs a continuous ambiance over various segments. Bassist Joseph Yarmush elaborates, “It was a conscious decision to make the album sound like one song. We wanted to calm down a bit, even during the mixing process: our notes were simply ‘you have to settle down’. I couldn’t technically explain what I meant by that, but the songs needed to settle down. We were basically trying to hold back all the bombastic tendencies and make things sound very subtle.”
Lead single “Witness Protection,” which Henry worked on as a studio collaborator consists of bright beat and fuzz tinged vocals and is accompanied by an Antoine Dasseville-directed visual. The video depicts someone watching flickering and destructive scenes on the television that grow darker and noisier overtime.
The Witness marks SUUNS’ most generous, stripped down and moving effort. Shemie mentions “There’s always this restraint in SUUNS: the question of ‘how long can we hold off?. I think it’s beautiful that way because it always brings out something unexpected. But if you’re willing to stick with us at a show or through our music in general – it will pay off. It might take a while to get there, but we will drop a beat for you eventually. I love that we’ve been able to stick to the minimal side of things, and just let it breathe.”
