Listen to Becky and the Birds’ Heartfelt New Single, “Should’ve known better (choices)”

The Swedish pop artist and producer returns with her first new single since releasing her latest record, Only music makes me cry now.

Pop musician Thea Gustafsson who releases music under the moniker Becky and the Birds has shared with an introspective new single titled, “Should’ve known better (choices).” The singer/producer interpolates her Only music makes me cry now track, “I look at the choices i made,” building off of her idiosyncratic production technique and approach to songwriting. While the songs mirror each other in terms of subject matter, Gustafsson recounts the aftermath of heartbreak, bridging the past and present together allowing listeners to feel her wide range of emotions through short verses. “My heart’s in pieces and I take all the blame,” she sings, accepting her fate in order to break free from the sadness, anger and disappointment. Her inclusion of a more second voice that is more confrontational presents a more complex narrative.

The single features a beautiful instrumental intro with Gustafsson playing the accordion that builds up to a layered, R&B tinged soundscape with southern hip-hop and trap influences. The production, “I look at the choices i made” feels reminiscent of an early 2000s R&B hit with an innovative, genre-defying touch.
