New Sounds: Five Great Albums to Listen to Today

Featuring new records from Chelsea Wolfe, Tinariwen, Denzel Curry, and more.

Unbound EP” by Chelsea Wolfe

The last supermoon of the year is set to rise in all of its glory tonight. The final offering from Chelsea Wolfe’s She Reaches Out To She She Reaches Out To She tryptic couldn’t arrive at a better time to mark the occasion. The project features five stripped-back renditions of songs from Wolfe’s recent full-length album, including an acoustic version of “The Liminal,” which she incorporated into her recent live performances. The EP culminates with a toned-down reimagining of Spiritbox’s “Cellar Door” which fits perfectly into the mix. The “Unbound EP” encapsulates the cycle of rebirth and the transformation that comes with the process of evolution. Wolfe’s voice no longer hides beneath a harsh soundscape, allowing space for vulnerability. Similar to her “Undone EP,” which features guest remixes of songs from She Reaches Out to She…, the project builds off from the central theme of transformation. Together, this trilogy of records connect past, present, and future through the inevitable process of change.

Idrache (Traces Of The Past) by Tinariwen

The Tuareg blues rock pioneers’ new album consists of a beautiful collection of rarities and previously unheard live recordings. The stripped-back recordings showcase the legendary band under a radiant light. While their records often present a lovely cultural exchange with their western collaborators, Idrache (Traces Of The Past) captures an intimate snapshot of their creative process and beloved Saharan sound. Tracks including, “Amoss Idjraw,” and the acoustic demo of their essential cut, “Tenhert,” feel transportive, transporting listeners back to their origins. The record offers a glimpse into the prolific group’s world, bridging together their classics with revisited cuts that will go on to take a life of their own.

Only Music Makes Me Cry Now! by Becky and the Birds

Experimental pop producer Thea Gustafsson has unveiled her full-length debut album under the Becky and the Birds moniker. The Swedish producer presents an eclectic collection of abstract compositions that flow together seamlessly. Gustafsson conjures a lush and hypnotic soundscape paired with introspective narratives, characterized by her futuristic production technique. The sampled audio-bites and abstract instrumentation create an alluring and idiosyncratic sound bath. Personification by Maxo Kream

Maxo Kream’s new album is nothing short of introspective. On Personification, the Nigerian-American rapper looks inward, reflecting on everything from the death of his father, to gang life, to faith and beyond. Personification is a layered and narrative-driven project characterized by his raw and unfiltered lyricism. Each track paints an ultra-vivid scenarios.
